4th Generation Co-Guardians Shaping a Billion Dollar Legacy
By Mike Boyd • Issue #11 • View online
The big idea from my recent podcast episode with Fred Mouawad is “co-guardianship” - an approach to nurturing a business, family, and ultimately, a legacy, for generations.
Similar in ethos to stewardship, the 4th generation Mouawad brothers have developed the concept of co-guardianship to safely deliver their multi-billion dollar family enterprise into the hands of the 5th generation.
“Our responsibility was to guard that heritage. That’s why we call it co-guardians to look after it and start thinking long-term because our job is to look after it for only a certain period of time. It’s a transition from generation to generation.” - Fred Mouawad [24:14]
This episode is jam-packed with such rich (no pun intended) content that I needed to highlight it in this extended format. Fred’s success in his own right (he’s a 7x entrepreneur) is unusual given the significant family resources available to him. Talk about developing motivated and ambitious children of wealth…

Fun Fact
Fred’s father Robert Mouawad sold a flawless 218 carat diamond to billionaire Stanley Ho for over US$100M to display in his Macau casino.
The best investment I have ever made…
“…was investing in myself, investing in my education, and having the courage to gain new experiences. Always being an avid learner. This is what I find the most satisfying, gratifying, and what enables me to do what I do. It’s investing in knowledge and experience and trying to share that with your team.” - Fred Mouawad [50:11]
A global citizen, portfolio entrepreneur, and fourth-generation co-guardian of the Mouawad family jewellery business, Fred Mouawad’s story is as incredible as it is impactful. Listen in to learn how he brings a new and enterprising perspective to his family’s multi-generational success.
Impressive
Mouawad hold a total of 5 Guinness World Records for jewellery pieces, many of which are the most elaborate and expensive of their kind in the world.

The Mouawad L'Incomparable Diamond Necklace holds the record for the most valuable necklace in the world (US $55 million) and features the flawless 407.48-carat yellow diamond, suspended gracefully from a 229.52-carat white diamond necklace intertwined by 18-karat rose gold branchlets.

@sethjberman I always found it fascinating that luxury companies melt their inventory to control supply.

Eames chairs are closer to art than furniture. Reverse logistics to control secondary market would make a lot of sense. https://t.co/TprMMQbnQE
